The Dinosaur with the Fern-Shaped Tail

Problem illustration

Scientists in Chile have discovered a brand-new dinosaur with a very "sharp" secret: a built-in sword! This small, 2-metre-long dinosaur is called Stegouros elengassen. While other dinosaurs had tails with spikes or heavy clubs, this one had a flat, fern-shaped tail that looked just like an ancient Aztec weapon called a macuahuitl. Imagine having a sword made of bone growing right out of your tail! This tough little dinosaur lived about 72 million years ago and used its special "sword-tail" to defend itself. Learn more!

Wee Ones

If you are standing at the dinosaur's nose looking right at its face, is its long sword-tail right in front of your eyes or is it hidden behind its big body?

Little Kids

The dinosaur has 7 bony plates on its tail. If it grew 1 more plate, would it have an even or an odd number of plates in total?

Big Kids

A toy model of this dinosaur costs $12. If you pay for it with a $20 bill, how much change should you get back?

The Sky's the Limit

This dinosaur's tail is flat and straight like a ruler. If it swings its tail in a perfect half-circle to scare away a predator, how many degrees has the tail moved?
