The Moon's Newest Crater

Problem illustration

The Moon just got a brand-new "scar"! A huge rock from space crashed into the Moon's surface, creating a crater 225 metres wide. That's as big as two football fields put together! NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was circling the Moon and snapped a picture of the giant hole, which is also about 43 metres deep. Craters this big only happen about once every 139 years! Learn more!

Wee Ones

The Moon is covered in craters! If you see 2 craters in one part of the Moon and 5 craters in another part, which part has more craters?

Little Kids

The new crater is 43 metres deep. If we round 43 to the nearest ten, how many metres deep is it?

Big Kids

A scientist found five moon rocks that weighed 2 kilograms, 5 kilograms, 2 kilograms, 7 kilograms, and 2 kilograms. Which weight was the "mode," or the one that appeared the most?

The Sky's the Limit

This kind of big crater only forms once every 139 years. If one formed today in the year 2026, in what year would scientists expect the next one to form?
