The Singing Teachers

Problem illustration

Regent Honeyeaters are beautiful black and yellow birds from Australia that are famous for their lovely singing. But because there are so few of them left in the wild, young birds are forgetting how to sing! To save their song, scientists are bringing in older, wild birds to be "singing teachers" for the young ones. These "tutors" teach the young birds exactly which notes to sing so they can talk to each other and find mates. Learn more!

Wee Ones

If a young bird has an older bird to teach him the song every day, is it likely or unlikely that he will learn to sing?

Little Kids

Scientists found that the "singing school" works best when there are 5 young birds for every 1 teacher. If there is 1 teacher and 5 young birds, how many birds are in the classroom in total?

Big Kids

It takes about 3 months for a young bird to learn its full song. If a bird starts its singing lessons on April 1st, in what month will it finish its lessons?

The Sky's the Limit

There are only about 250 Regent Honeyeaters left in the wild. If scientists can help double the population, how many birds will there be?
