The Sticky Rice Secret

The Great Wall of China is so long that if you stretched it out in a straight line, it would reach more than halfway around the world! But the most surprising thing about the wall isn't its length—it's the "secret ingredient" hidden between the bricks. Over 600 years ago, workers mixed sticky rice (the same kind you might eat for dinner!) into the mortar to hold the wall together. This "sticky rice soup" made the wall so strong that modern bulldozers have a hard time knocking it down, and even today, weeds still can't grow through it! Learn more!
Wee Ones
Imagine you are standing on top of the Great Wall. To your left is a tall watchtower, and to your right is a long, winding path. If you turn your body halfway around, is the watchtower now on your right or still on your left?
Little Kids
A worker is building a small section of the wall. He starts with a pile of 45 bricks but uses 20 of them to finish a row. How many bricks does he have left in his pile?
Big Kids
The "sticky rice" technology was used to reinforce the wall during the Ming Dynasty, which started in the year 1368 and ended in 1644. For how many years did the Ming Dynasty last?
The Sky's the Limit
The total length of the Great Wall, including all its branches, is about 21,000 kilometres. if a world-class hiker can walk exactly 35 kilometres every day, how many days would it take them to walk the entire length of the wall?
